Yesterday was my birthday and, as we said in yesterday's post, we decided to take a road trip to Pietown, New Mexico. Pietown is a very, very small community with two good restaurants. Back in the old days a merchant in the area also made really good pies that everyone liked. They were so good that everyone started calling the area Pietown.
It was a three hour drive from our home in Corrales. The highway to Pietown, US 60, goes past a place many of you may have seen in some movies such as Contact with Jodie Foster and 2010 - the Very Large Array.
It's a complex of radio telescopes just off the highway so we were able to stop and take a picture or two.
The only problem getting to Pietown was we had to go through two different construction areas. I guess we can always be glad that there is work for those who need it.
When we finally got to Pietown we decided to stop at the Pie-O-Neer restaurant.
It has a limited lunch menu and it's only open until 4:00 PM. We had a choice of a vegetable quiche or green chile stew. There focus is making pies. We decided on the quiche and it was delicious.
For our piece of pie we both decided on the blueberry pie with some vanilla ice cream. This is Megan, our waitress, who is fixing our pie.
That's an apple and rhubarb pie closest to you, a cherry pie next, our blueberry pie, a coconut cream pie and finally a couple of pieces of chocolate pie. Normally, I would go for the chocolate, but the blueberry pie looked too good to pass up.
We originally planned to go back the way we came, but Megan suggested we do a loop by going another 22 miles down US 60 to Quemado then take a couple of highways North that would take us to Interstate 40. The last road would take us through the El Malpais National Monument which we have visited before with our friends Bob and Molly. It's a beautiful area and we knew it would be a beautiful drive.
As we approached an area called the Narrows the traffic stopped. There were about six or seven cars in front of us. We could see a fire truck and several ambulances up ahead so we figured there had been a wreck, but we couldn't see for sure what happened.
After awhile the ambulances took off in the same direction we were going so the traffic was able to start moving again. As we passed the area, we saw that it was a motorcycle that had wrecked on the side of the road. The road is very curvy through the Narrows and they must have missed a curve. We thought we were OK for the rest of our trip.
However, about 3 or so miles up the road the traffic stopped again.
This time we could see what was going on. An air care helicopter was sitting in the middle of the road. Evidently the injuries were pretty serious to call in a helicopter. We waited while they transferred one person from an ambulance to the helicopter.
Finally, the helicopter took off. Betty and I said a little prayer for the person's healing.
Once again we finally were able to take off again and we made it home safely with no further unexpected incidents.
It was a good birthday and we enjoyed being together riding in our convertible through beautiful country and eating good pie. However, we pray for the best for those involved in the motorcycle accident.
