Meet Sands

This is Sands, the Rocky Mountain Horse I rode yesterday and will ride today, Thursday, and Friday. He's not as finished a horse as Fresco is, but that's good for my training.

Sands was given to Larry Whitesell because he would always buck people off any time he was ridden outside of an arena. Larry and his partner Jennifer (holding Sands in the picture) have worked with him so that he's now safe to ride (which is a good thing for yours truly).

Today we're going to work on turning on the haunches and speed control. It should be a good day.

Second Day

Our second day was really a great learning experience. We focused on our cues and how they affected the horses.

This is the horse I rode, Fresco, a Paso Fino. He's one of Larry's finished horses so I was able to focus on what I was doing without worrying about him. He was very tolerant of my mistakes.

Wednesday, we're going to do more exercises to help the horses stay in balance, soften and relax.

Outdoor Weddings - You Never Know What To Expect.

I mentioned that Betty and I did a wedding last Thursday night and it went very well. The weather was perfect for an outdoor wedding.

Here's a young couple getting married in Kansas. He's a rodeo bull rider and she's a barrel racer. Their weather was a little different, but it looks like everyone took it in stride.

Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Untitled

I arrived at Larry Whitesell's place in Baxter, Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. It's hot and humid - really humid. Besides missing Betty and our horses already, I miss New Mexico - even with its winds.

We start our clinic this morning, Monday with some basic instructions and most of the day will be spent on ground work for collection and balance.

I'll also find out which of his horses I'll be working with.

The wifi is spotty here, but I hope to be able to do a post each morning.

Take care.

Sunday Reflection - Morning Glory

From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. Psalms 113:3

One of the joys of having horses is the morning feeding. I usually get outside just before or just as the sun is coming up.

This past Friday morning we had some smoky haze from a wildfire in Southwest New Mexico. It made for a pretty spectacular sunrise.

I am often moved to reflect on the glory of God when I see the glory of the sunrise. He truly is the Master Artist.

Heading to Tennessee to Learn More

I will board a Southwestern flight today at Noon to fly to Nashville, Tennessee. I will spend tonight with Betty's stepmother, Nita, in Franklin, Tennessee.

After lunch on Sunday I'll drive my rental car to Baxter, Tennessee (close to Cookeville). Monday morning I'll start a week long horsemanship clinic with Larry Whitesell.

Larry is a gaited horse trainer and Betty and I have been using his methods for about a year and a half now with Sugar and Morgunn. We've seen some good results.

I'll use one of his horses and my goal for the training is to improve myself as a rider/trainer. I know that Sugar's growth and development is directly connected to my growth and development.

The clinic ends Friday afternoon. I'll drive back to Franklin Friday night and spend Friday and Saturday nights with Nita. I fly home on Sunday, June 3.

I have no idea if I will have a wifi connection or not. I stuck a few scheduled posts on if I don't have a wifi connection. If I do have a connection I'll post about my activities throughout the week.

Keep Betty in your thoughts and prayers. She'll have full duty for the house and the horses while I'm gone. I have no doubts that she's capable. I wouldn't leave for over a week if I had any concerns. But it's still a big job for just one person.

Be good while I'm gone and don't forget me.

Busy But Good Day

Today, Thursday, is a full day.

This morning we're going by a local pottery place in Corrales to pick up a wedding gift. Then we'll go by the bank to deposit some checks. Then we head for a title company. We're refinancing our house to take advantage of the lower interest rates. Back in the late 1970's, during the Jimmy Carter era, we had a house with a 13.5% interest rate. It's hard to imagine how we managed, but we did.

This afternoon, Betty has a chiropractor appointment.

Finally, this evening we're doing a wedding. One of our ministries and joys is to do premarital counseling for couples at our church. We're often asked to do the wedding after we get to know the couple and they get to know us.

The couple is Kimber and Rod and the wedding is at Kimber's mother's house which is here in Corrales. It will be held in her courtyard which has a beautiful view of the Sandia Mountains.

So, a full day, but a good day, God willing.

Laid Back Rabbit

When our house was first built eight years ago, the wildlife in the area - coyotes, jack rabbits and bunnies - were all really wary of humans. They would run away at the first sight of us.

Now, several generations have been born and raised around us and it's clear they are less wary than their grandparents and great-grandparents.

An example is yesterday when I went out to clean up the horses' manure. there was a bunny resting in the shade of our new sun shade we recently got for the horses.

Even though I was working just 15 or so feet from him and Morgunn was watching him even closer, the bunny was relaxed and even looked as if he was going to sleep.

Eventually Morgunn got really curious and walked toward him to smell him out and that was a little more than our bunny could handle and he sauntered off.

They're Gone

Wade Daniel, Marie, Juliet and Leah left this morning to go home to Fort Collins, Colorado. We were sad to see them go.

Here are a few pictures from Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday we had the Ditch Pony Promenade in Corrales. It's a free kids horse show and I'm the 'official' photographer - mainly because my friend Melanie from Dan's Boots and Saddles is the founder and organizer of the event. Betty and the kids and grandkids came to watch for awhile.

Monday morning I had to work at Galloping Grace Youth Ranch. Betty and the kids and grandkids came over so the girls could play on their play ground while I worked with our Junior Volunteers on improving their riding skills.

Monday afternoon they all got into the hot tub.

Finally, after supper, Juliet rode Morgunn one more time using the skills I learned at Galloping Grace.

It was a great visit and we already miss them.

Kids

No Sunday Reflection today. I'm off this morning to shoot photos at our annual kids horse show - the Ditch Pony Promenade. This afternoon I'll be with the kids and grandkids. And tonight we're hoping to see the solar eclipse.

Here are a few photos from our day yesterday.

Kids and Grandkids Are Coming!

Our Fort Collins son, daughter-in-law and granddaughters are on their way down I-25 as you read this. They should arrive just before dinner time today.

Betty and I have been cleaning up the house - and kid-proofing - for the past two days. It's a good excuse to get those dust bunnies that have been hiding under the bed. I also cleaned our windows and mopped our tile floor (which gets done about once every two years).

They will be here until Tuesday morning. I'll try to post a few pictures while they're here, but I'm sure you'll understand that spending time posting a blog will be way down on my priority list this weekend.

Cactus Update

Here's an update on our yucca cactus in our courtyard. If you recall, it has sprouted a third arm and we noticed that when it started sending up flower stalks.

Now it's about to bloom.

Antelope Squirrels At Play

(Our new header is our son, Wade Daniel, daughter-in-law, Marie, and granddaughters, Juliet and Leah in Estes Park, Colorado. They live in Fort Collins, Colorado.)

Each Spring, we have two or three new, baby Antelope Squirrels. They were out this past week and I got some video of them at play.

Enjoy.

A Busy Day

Today, Tuesday, was a busy but good day. It started with us going to exercise this morning. Betty and I try to exercise at our local gym twice a week.

After exercising, we went to several stores looking for several things. Our Colorado kids and granddaughters are coming this Friday for a long weekend visit. They'll be with us until Tuesday morning.

After our shopping we went to our local coffee shop, Satellite Coffee, for some coffee and pastries for breakfast. They have the best coffee in Albuquerque as far as I'm concerned. Then we went to our Sunflower Market to get some groceries and stopped at our local feed store, Village Mercantile, on the way home to get some sunflower seeds to feed the birds. Betty also bought some plants to put into a planter on our patio.

When we got home we worked Sugar and Morgunn in the round pen. They both did really well. We're working on our technique to be sure we're controlling their speed and not getting them too revved up. It went great today.

In the early afternoon, our farrier, Craig Trnka and his son Bodie, came and gave Sugar and Morgunn a trim. They do great with him and it's a nice visit for all of us. They're good folks.

After lunch, which is our main meal of the day, Betty worked in the house and I cleaned windows - not one of my favorite jobs. Tomorrow, I'll do a job I like even less - mopping our tile floors.

But, it's worth it to be able to see our kids and grandkids.

Monday Video - Cute Alert

When you were a little kid having a nightmare, wouldn't you want your Mom to give you a hug to let you know everything is OK?

Same is true for a kitten and a cat Mom.

Sunday Reflections - Patterns

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

'Do not conform to the pattern of this world.' An interesting statement.

When I think of a pattern, I think of my Mom at her sewing machine, usually making a dress or skirt for herself. She would buy a pattern, cut out all the pieces and sew them together. She was pretty good and followed the pattern closely so her work usually turned out well.

Another pattern I think of is a Paint By Numbers piece. As a kid I did several of these. The canvas would have a pattern printed on it with numbers in each of the pieces of the pattern. Each number corresponded to a certain paint color. If you followed the pattern and put the correct paint color in each space then the picture would appear.

In both cases the patterns are the work of someone else. The sewing pattern was created by a designer at some company. Likewise the Paint By Number pattern was created by someone else. They were the designers. If we followed their patterns then we didn't create anything of our own, but rather created their vision, their design for us.

So, what is the world's pattern?

I believe the pattern we choose to follow sometimes comes from our parents. They have a pattern for how they hope we will turn out - usually to be successful in some kind of meaningful career, to make a lot of money, to have a family, etc. If we follow their pattern closely then we will be successful by their terms. Sometimes our parents' pattern for us is not positive - you're stupid, clumsy, dumb, etc., etc. If we follow that pattern we live a life far below what God intends for us.

Sometimes the pattern we choose is one designed by our peers. I laugh everytime I see a young person who is defying standardization by how they dress. They want to be different, not buy into the world's pattern for them. However, they are dressing like thousands of other young people and they have just agreed to another standard, another pattern designed by someone else.

Sometimes the pattern is one designed by the career we choose. Doctors and lawyers are usually expected to dress a certain way and act a certain way.

In each of these patterns, our mind is conformed to the expectations, to the design created by someone else.

I believe God's design is that each of us is unique - with our own skills, abilities, talents and desires. There is no set pattern that we are to follow other than to follow Christ. Our minds are meant to be renewed, to be released, to be free of the world's patterns so that we may grow into the stature of Christ and to realize all the gifts and benefits of being a child of God.

We are not expected to look like Christ, but to be like Christ. Jesus was a complete human being and fully realized all that God the Father gave him in his human form. He was fully human and all that he was meant to be. The world, specifically the religious leaders of this day, had a pattern they expected him to conform to, but he did not chose to conform to their pattern. He wanted only to be what God meant for him to be.

I believe that's what God wants for us - to be fully human and and to be all that he means for us to be.

New Mexico Sunrise

I'm still playing with the time lapse app on my phone camera. Here's one of our New Mexico sunrises.

Pay close attention a little over half way through - especially when you see a pair of contrails in the sky enter from the right. You'll see one of our local residents make a quick appearance.

Work Day for the Horses

The last time we trailered Sugar and Morgunn it was down to the arena here in Corrales. Morgunn usually loads very easily into the trailer when we leave home, but he's not as easy to load when we want to come home. It usually takes 5 to 10 minutes to get him to load.

This last time at the arena Morgunn didn't want to load at all. We both worked with him for over an hour before we finally got him to load without forcing him in.

So, Wednesday morning, our first task was to practice loading and unloading with both of the horses. We had the trailer hooked up to our truck. The first try, Morgunn was resistant again, but he loaded after about 10 minutes. Sugar was a little prancy as well. The second try went better and the third was the best of all so we stopped there.

We took them into our back lot, saddled them and worked them for about 40 minutes. They did pretty well.

All in all a good work day for Sugar and Morgunn.

Friday, we'll trailer them back down to the arena for some more gait work and we'll see how they load both going and coming.

Junior Volunteer Training

Betty and I volunteer at Galloping Grace Youth Ranch. Over the last two years we have had a Junior Volunteer program where kids, 12 to 18, volunteer and help out the adults. This year we decided that we would devote Mondays to working with the Junior Volunteers to help them become better horse people.

We started last Monday with the basics - catching a horse, haltering, leading, grooming and saddling.

Yesterday, we reviewed the basics. Then we took them into the round pen and worked on some basic ground work to warm up the horses. They worked on some desensitizing, flexing the neck slightly, backing the horses up and moving the hindquarters.

Then we taught them how to mount correctly, maintaining control of the horse during the mounting process. We taught them how to do an emergency dismount. We taught them how to do a one-rein stop. And finally we taught them how to maintain control while safely dismounting. They all got to practice these with the horses - wearing helmets of course.

For most of them this was a first time experience and they did pretty well. The horses did pretty well considering how windy it was - see the trees bending in the picture above.

Next week, we'll start teaching them how to ride properly at the walk and then the trot. It's a fun experience.

Monday Video - Super Moon

Saturday evening was the night of the Super Moon. It was a full moon and it was at it's closest approach to Earth which makes it 14% larger than a normal full moon.

Here's a time lapse video of the sun set reflection on the mountain and the rising of the Super Moon.

Sunday Reflection - Perseverance

Romans 5:3,4 - Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

This scripture has always intrigued me. In the past, I have focused on the suffering as Betty and I have both had sessions of suffering in our lives. I have also focused on the concept of hope as it's our hope in Christ that has sustained us through all the times of our lives - good and bad, joyful and suffering.

But, between suffering and hope Paul inserts perseverance. This is the element that many of us, I suspect, like to overlook - at least I do. Perseverance requires work, focus, not giving up.

Suffering comes through a lot of different avenues - accidents, disease, illness, the acts of others. Perseverance is totally ours to embrace or reject.

Hope comes not out of suffering. Suffering by itself has little or no value unless it is accompanied by perseverance - not perservering in our strength, but perservering in Christ.

When suffering comes, and it will, it's our choice to persevere in Christ through that suffering and ultimately find hope as a result of our perseverance. Or, we can wallow in our suffering, seeking someone or something to blame for the our condition.

Perseverance requires relinquishing our desire to blame someone or something and to look forward to what God will bring out of our suffering - and that knowledge that something good will come, even if we can't see any possibility of that good at the moment, - that knowledge is the seed of our hope.

Betty's Birthday Trip

Yesterday was Betty's birthday. I asked her where she wanted to eat her birthday lunch and, after some thought, she said the San Marcos Cafe.

If you're not familiar with the San Marcos Cafe, it's located on the Northern part of the Turquoise Trail which is Highway 14 that goes up the East side of the Sandia Mountains - the other side of the mountain from us.

So, we headed out this morning down I-25 to I-40 to go East through the Tijeras Canyon to get to the Southern end of the Turquoise Trail. Before getting to San Marcos Cafe, we stopped in Madrid, an old coal mining town that was abandoned years ago. It's come back as an arts and crafts town with a lot of little, quirky stores that are fun to visit.

The final scenes in the movie "Wild Hogs" were filmed in Madrid. This is the diner from the movie (I think it was called 'Peggy's Place') and it's now a souvenir shop. Note the neat old Ford in the left of the picture - typical of Madrid.

Here are a couple of other pictures from Madrid that highlight it's quirky charm.

After doing a little shopping in Madrid we headed North to the San Marcos Cafe. The cafe is actually part of the San Marcos Feed Store.

If you look close at the picture above you can see a blue male peacock's head sticking up behind the large railroad ties at the bottom center.

Besides the food (Betty had a carne adovada burrito and I had a Frito pie), one of the attractions of San Marcos Cafe is it's wildlife - chickens, rooster, turkeys, and peacocks roam freely around the place. While eating we watched three male turkeys go into a full display. There were several female and male peacocks - including one white male peacock. I wish I had gotten a picture of him.

On the way home we stopped at the Range Cafe in Bernalillo to get a dessert to take home for our evening snack.

All in all, a great day for Betty's birthday and a good choice for our lunch.
