Look Out Rockettes
When our two sons were in high school, they were in a group that did both song and dance. They spent many an early morning before school practicing their routines and songs. What impressed me most by their experience was the dedication and commitment it took to participate and do well - which they did. So, I enjoy seeing that many of today's high school kids are obviously putting that same hard work my sons did 25 years ago.
Here's a Minneapolis high school group winning their state championship in what is called kick dance.

Bunny on the Block
A couple of days ago, I bought a seed block for our ground feeding birds. The label called it a Quail and Dove Block, but the smaller print said it would also feed all ground feeding birds and mammals.
Our quail have found it and seem to like it. We haven't had any doves yet.
Sure enough, on Sunday our resident bunny, Peter Rabbit, found the block and there's no question he likes it. That's a good thing. If he fills up on this seed block maybe he won't be as hungry for Betty's plants.

Not Much Going On
It's been cold and windy so we haven't been able to work with the horses, plus Betty has had a back strain for about a week. It's getting better and, if the weather cooperates next week we'll be able to get back out with the horses.

Sunday Reflection - The Heart
The heart is often referred to when we talk about our spirit, our soul. It is symbolically considered to be the foundation of our emotions, especially love.

The human heart has four chambers. Deoxygenated blood flows through the heart in one direction, entering through the superior vena cava into the right atrium and is pumped through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle before being pumped out through the pulmonary valve to the pulmonary arteries into the lungs. It returns from the lungs through the pulmonary veins to the left atrium where it is pumped through the mitral valve into the left ventricle before leaving through the aortic valve to the aorta.
So, to my simple mind, tired, depleted blood that needs oxygen comes into the right upper chamber of the heart and from there it is pumped into the lower right chamber. From there our blood is pumped to the lungs where it picks up a new source of oxygen and is pumped back into the left upper chamber. From there it is pumped to the lower left chamber and then out through the main line (aorta) to continue giving life to our bodies.
I know there's a whole lot more to it than that, but that's about as far as my limited understanding will take me.
When Betty and I counsel married couples we often refer to the four parts of the heart, but in a different way.
God designed our hearts so there's a place for him and him alone. The second part of our heart is reserved for our spouse. The third part of our heart is reserved for our children. The fourth part is reserved for everyone else - family, friends and strangers. (Notice there are no parts of our heart that are reserved for work, material things, etc.)
God's part of our heart is where we find life, find our worth. We often try to fill that part of our heart with other things that we believe will give us life, give us worth - work, sex, drugs, money, etc. - but they can't do it. Only God can fill that part of our heart and give us life and worth.
Our spouse's part of our heart is the next most important. Companionship, love (both emotional and physical), support, etc. are meant to come from our spouse. It's important that we don't let children or other family members try to fill that spot.
Our human hearts work best and give us physical life when all four chambers are working properly and in the right order.
That is also true of our spiritual heart. It's important we keep God first, our spouse second, children third and everyone else follows.

Sunny Day in Santa Fe
Thursday, Betty and I drove to Santa Fe to Canyon Road and had lunch at a little cafe called Cafe Des Artistes. It was a delightful place owned and run by a native Parisian. Betty had a prosciutto salad and I had a smoked salmon salad - both of which were delicious.
After lunch we drove over to the plaza and just walked around looking in the stores. We grabbed a couple of mochas before we headed home.
It was cool, but a beautiful day for mid-February.

Early Spring?
Betty and I worked with Morgunn and Sugar yesterday, Wednesday, and they both did pretty well. After we were done, I heard a familiar squawking sound and looked up. There were 7 or 8 different flights of Sandhill Cranes heading North. In the almost 9 years we've lived in New Mexico this is the earliest we've seen them heading back to the Northern extremes.
Maybe an early Spring?

Morgunn in Black
Betty and I worked with Morgunn and Sugar Monday morning after a two week layoff primarily because of the cold weather we've had. They both have some things to work on and we'll try again today and Wednesday as the weather is supposed to be good those days.
I ran across this video today and it could be Morgunn if he were a black horse. In the same situation, Morgunn could do exactly the same things.

Sunday Reflection - Super Bowl Trophy, Rings and Things
Unless you've been living in a hole in the ground with the groundhog celebrated each February 2, you know that today is Super Bowl Sunday. Now, before going on, I'll confess that I enjoy pro football and especially the Super Bowl as much as any one.
These men will be throwing their bodies into harm's way for the right to call themselves World Champions - at least for a year. This seems odd since all the possible participants are US teams. Perhaps US Champions would be more appropriate.
The winning team's players will receive approximately $84,000 which is a nice piece of change. The team will receive the Vince Lombardi tropy (see left) and each player will also get a Super Bowl ring made expecially for their team.
Finally, at the end of the game they'll pull Super Bowl Champion t-shirts over their sweat stained game jerseys and put on Super Bowl Champion hats on their sweaty heads. For a brief moment, all of these 'things' will make them feel on top of their world. For a brief moment, all of their life issues common to all of us human types, will be pushed to the background until the glow of the moment passes in a few hours, days or weeks.
I'm sure there are a few coaches and players who will keep it all in perspective, see past all these 'things' and just be satisfied with the reward of doing their best. But, I suspect these people are few and far between.
One of the advantages of growing older is seeing things with a new perspective. I enjoy my house, car and truck. I enjoy the tack I use to ride my horse. I enjoy using my iPad and laptop computer. I enjoy taking pictures with my camera. I enjoy playing my tenor ukelele and American Indian flutes. Beyond that most things in my life have a strictly utilitarian function.
However, none of these things, including the ones I enjoy, bring any value to my life. I am who I am in God's sight - nothing more and nothing less.
My wise older son, Wade Daniel, has a signature on his emails that sums up this post very well:
"Worship God, love people, use things. Don't get the order mixed up."
